Inspiration at Home

Our design team member Kelly has come to the end of her contract time with IIG and she has some final projects to share with us today. Let me say that Kelly has been wonderful to work with and has created so many projects that you should still visit her at her personal blog to see what she will be doing next :)

In the meantime a big thanks to Kelly and well wishes!
Deb♥

There have been times where my desk has become a pile of “s-crap”. For months. Yes, months. Sure, I can go to the internet or look through my pages of ideas that I’ve ripped out of magazines, but what has helped me re-fuel is to look at the “everyday”. After all, isn’t that why we scrapbook? Save some time, save your money. Look around you. What can you find to inspire you? A cereal box? A bible verse? A pair of shoes? A shower curtain?

While we may have wonderful memories from vacations, weddings, and graduations, “everyday” is where we spend most of our time. And, sometimes it’s not enough to see those memories in scrapbook form. We need to let our creative juices pour out into other things…our jewelry, paintings, walls, gardens, furniture. After all, we are not just scrapbookers. We are artists.

I’m hoping to inspire you to make your creative juices pour out.

My first source of inspiration? My bathroom tile. I hate it. Wait, HATE is such a strong word. I really, really, really, really do not like my bathroom tile. I look at it and it screams 1966! It’s cream colored with light brown flecks (which look like freckles) and every so often there is unique tile that really screams 1966! It looks like… gear shaped snowflakes?! And while I really, really, really, really do not like it in my bathroom, I’ve used it as a source of inspiration for a scrapbook page.

Here is a picture of my tile (I told you, 1966!!!)

Here is the page that it inspired.

Headline: Ugly tile inspires A Whole New World. I cut square cardstock “tiles” and fleck painted them by putting brown paint on an old toothbrush and rubbing it against a piece of plastic. After they were dry, I ran the squares through a Cuttlebug embossing folder (Swiss dots). I used Spellbinder nesting dies and Sizzix snowflake dies and assorted punches to re-create that “unique” tile design.

Right now, go look at your bathroom tile. Go. Right now, I’ll wait…Hopefully, yours is newer than 1966. But ugly or not, let it inspire your next scrapbook page. And, come back and show us your tile inspired art.

Be inspired every day, by the everyday.

Inspired Every Day Project 2
It’s hot as ever, and when looking for inspiration, I’m thinking of the cooler days to come. Today, my inspiration is in the garden. Underneath those leafy, tall stalks lay pebbles of color. I love growing Indian corn in the garden because there is a surprise in every ear. I will never be able to create anything as beautiful as God’s shiny jewels, but I try. Scraps become small circles, and the small circles become kernels. Crimped papers become leafy husks. What’s growing in your yard that can inspire you?

Be inspired every day by the everyday.

Get Ready to Shed Tears

October as we all know is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Last year I started a tribute on IIG to do what I called Pink Out asking The Groovy Chicks, to share as many pink layouts and/or projects as they had. This was to be shown in honor of those who have fought the battle and lost, as well as to those who fight with a capital F-I-G-H-T.

Groovy Chick Jeannie has put together an amazingly beautiful Pink Out video for everyone to share in together. PLEASE take the time to listen to the beautiful words of songs by Mercy Me playing as you take a look at the women we have lost, women we love still, the women who are not even grown women yet.

Sorry we could not show this in October, but EVERY month should be October when it comes to this cause!!! We are in this together, so please fight for the cure so that WE Women stand united against the uninvited!!!

Special thanks to Groovy Chick Jeannie for her hard work!

Groovy Chicks and the Artists who Inspire Them

The Groovy Chicks have been working hard to bring some very special projects and this one we have been anxiously waiting to show you! We were inspired to take an artist well known, local, or otherwise and use his or her art work as inspiration. Read on to see the piece from our famous artist and how we created after looking at each artist...

I was searching the computer when I stumbled on this website:
http://www.cafepress.com/SteeleWomanKind and was instantly drawn to the freeness of the watercolor work by this artist Elizabeth Moody Steele. Her work was called Womankind and so I decided to go with that as my inspiration and created a framed artwork that represents me and the women my girls are becoming and my love for them. Thanks for this artist and her work and to you for hearing my story. :)
Deb♥

My Artist: Elizabeth Moody Steele

Darlene Said:
When I first found Jackson Pollock's work recently I thought, how weird and interesting. I knew I needed to try this insane splatter technique on a scrapbook related project.

I gathered some acrylic paints, a paint palette, paintbrushes, and white cardstock for my supplies. I sat outside with my little girl on the grass throwing paint onto the cardstock. There was only one rule to my splatter- NO direct contact could be made onto the paper aside from the actual paint- the paintbrushes were merely a tool to distribute paint recklessly! It doesn't look like it really, but there are about 3 or 4 layers upon layers of paint in the final product. The background took me nearly an hour to paint completely to my liking, and I let it dry for 2-3 days on a flat surface. In real life you can see so much texture and detail in the dried background. :)

I printed out the Live, Laugh, Love title on a black and white family photo from my computer and matted the photo on a black sheet of cardstock. I then straight stitched through the outline of my matting to permanently adhere the mat to the bumpy texture behind the photo.

This was such a fun project and I am sure you can do a similar background effect to use in a card or other paper project that you dream up. Give this technique a try, I promise it's fun to fling paint carelessly! :)

Jeannie Said:
What an awesome challenge Deb! This was great fun. I chose to go a little un-traditional and chose an artist that might not fall under the same category as the MASTERS.

Ever since I was a child I have loved BABAR THE ELEPHANT. I can remember the stories even as I sit and write this. The paintings are always done in bright cheery colors. I think that must be why I like Laurent de Brunhoff, so much.

The BABAR paintings were originally done by Jean de Brunhoff. Laurent, his son, took over BABAR when his dad died of Tuberulosis at the age of 37.

This page is dedicated to my older son because 2 of his favorite things in the world are elephants and hot air balloons.

Kelly Said:

Starry, starry night...paint your palette blue and gray...look out on a summer's day. For this layout, I looked to the stars and got inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's painting and a song about the man (Vincent-my favorite version is Josh Groban's). All of the scraps of blue paper in my stash were used up as I cut wavy swirls. A little glitter glue for sparkly stars and some punched shapes... and I've "lifted" a masterpiece. My version may not get to hang in the Museum of Modern Art, but it's just as precious to me.

Natalie Said:
I have always wondered who was behind the unique artistic style, which used primary colors that I would see in various venues. The main colors were black, white, and primary colors, red, blue, and yellow. I finally found out they were created or inspired by a creative and innovative artist: Piet Mondrian. The style that I recreated of his is called "Neoplasticism". He and other artists have gone on to use other colors, mediums, and textures to create art that looks similar to or was inspired by his works using the primary colors. Here is my layout, inspired by Piet Mondrian and the star is my little girl!

Kitties are Everywhere! Want one or two???

Happy Adopt-A-Cat Month®!
Have you ever walked into the already crowded shelters in your area and seen the many kitty faces peeking out from the cages? I have and it is so hard to see. Design team member Heather portays that very well in her image.

I asked the other Groovy "Cat People" Chicks to participate in this celebration by hand doodling a kitty picture. Want to see what we came up with? Here is mine...
There were no restrictions so Kelly and then Darlene actually turned theirs into cards.

And how cute is Natalie's kitty playing in a bag? Mine do that and then wait for someone to come by to "play" with them!

Please visit your locality and see if you can provide a loving home to a furry little kitty or an older cat that could have so much life left to share with a special someone. Here is a link to the Humane Society website as well as the ASPCA who participate in the Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat program this month too.
For fun here are lyrics to The Aristocats by Maurice Chevalier,Richard M. Sherman, and Robert B. Sherman respectively because all felines would love to be treated as in this song. Meow!!!

Which pet's address
Is the finest in Paris?
Which pet possess
The longest pedigree?
Which pets get to sleep
On velvet mats?
Naturalment! The aristocats!

Which pets are blessed
With the fairest forms and faces?
Which pets know best
All the gentle social graces?
Which pets live
On cream and loving pats?
Naturalment! The aristocats!

They show aristocratic bearing
When they're seen
Upon an airing
And aristocratic flair
In what they do
And what they say!

Aristocats are never found
In alleyways or hanging around
The garbage cans where
Common kitties play, oh no

Which pets are known
To never show their claws?
Which pets are prone
To hardly any flaws?
To which pets do the others
Tip their hats?
Naturalment! The aristocats!

They show aristocratic bearing
When they're seen
Upon an airing
And aristocratic flair
In what they do
And what they say!

Aristocats are never found
In alleyways or hanging around
The garbage cans where
Common kitties play, oh no

Naturalment! Naturalment!
Oh, naturalment!
The aristocats!

Mother's Day Groovy Style!!!

Mother's Day is here! How lucky we all are to have our beautiful children in our lives and so some of us here at If It's Groovy would like to share our children with you :)

I have been absolutely blessed to be a mother. It sometimes rattles my mind to think that I have my two beautiful children. I love them and consider them the biggest blessing that God has given me and entrusted me with. Today I celebrate that love and cannot wait to experience each and every moment with my girls. They have taught me patience and even more impatience at times ;), how to embrace everything little and big, to smile even when it is difficult, and to love like I never knew that I could.

They are always the biggest focus of my scrapbooking and today I would like to share a fun picture we took together that I plan to scrapbook for the challenge this month of using a shadow in your layout :)

Please don't forget to take a picture of yourself for your children! Have a wonderfully blessed and rich Mother's Day with your families!!!
Deb♥

Jami Lynn has some really cute pics of her Sweetheart and I thought it was so cute what she had to say about him. Happy Mother's Day Jami Lynn!

"One thing this little Sweetheart and I have in common is wanting to look good before we leave the house. Most mornings I end up fixing his hair for him, but he wanted to help this morning. ; ] We also coordinate on his outfits regularly. He's only six but he can match shirts & shorts & shoes better than his father can most days, lol!"

Let's see what she is talking about huh?

Look at this cool rendition of pics from Darlene and her little dollbaby! Happy Mother's Day Darlene!!!

My daughter is one of the best gifts that God could have ever blessed me with. I wonder why He chose me to be this angels mother? My daughter, Ally, is my entire world. She is sweetest person I've ever met, and I am amazed at how beautiful, smart, and funny she is at her young 3 years of age. How blessed am I to call this girl, that is capable of making all sadness disappear with just a kiss and a hug, my daughter? She brings sunshine into my life everyday. I love my dearest Ally, with all that I have and I always will.

Vanessa has a large family by the standards of today, let's take a look at what she would like to say about being a mom to her children:

Being a mom is the greatest treasure that God has ever blessed me with. I am especially blessed to be a mom of 3 boys and 4 girls. Every day is an adventure. It is sometimes overwhelming to be “mothering” so many different ages at once. My girls are 21, 16, 15, and 3. They cover 3 decades of my life. But… it is so wonderful to grow through these stages. I am “mommy” to my 3 year old… she is my joy and my youth. Every day her hugs and “I love you’s” gives me strength. She is also my reminder that daily, my faith in God must be lived out before my children. Her faith is so pure and innocent… If I tell her God said, or God does… there is no question! My teenage girls are filled with ups and downs. The happiness one day and the “life stinks” the next… reminds me to have grace and patience. It reminds me how my life was so unpredictable, but that God is faithful… and so forgiving… just how I must be with them. And my 21 year old… well a new joy has come with her. I’ve “mothered” her all these years, we have passed most of the “rocky roads”, and have moved into being friends and confidants. I can never express how much I love these girls. How thankful I am that God chose me to be their mom. My prayer every day is that He keeps us close, and that they continue to grow into the beautiful women God has planned for them to be.

Happy Mother's Day Vanessa!

Heather has some motherly wisdom to share with us and a great family photo:

My motherly advice is just to love and cuddle them as much as possible! Just because they are boys doesn’t mean that they can’t still be cuddly little boys! I love that my boys climb up on my lap every night to watch cartoons. They are very loving and affectionate boys – full of hugs and kisses! And yet, they play with each other like they are pro-wrestlers.

A special time for us is when I am tucking them into bed at night. Every night to each one of them, I say the following (and now they say it with me J ), “Sleep tight sweet child, while the stars shine above, I love you as much as a mother can love. Good night, (insert name), I love you.”

(It’s from a book but I don’t remember which one)

Happy Mother's Day Heather!!!

1 Photo 3 Ways!

I recently swapped photos with fellow Fiskateer April Dawn. She would be scrapbooking my picture and I scrapbooked hers. What April Dawn did not know was that I would also be scrapping the same pic and on Valentine's Day I asked my husband to also for the first time scrapbook that same picture. I personally think there are not nearly enough guys in scrapbooking so when I explained this to my husband Kevin he decided to play nice and do this. Isn't he a good sport? LOL!

So to let him know how much I appreciate him taking on my challenge I will show you his first then, my guest swapper April Dawns and following with my own. I am going to put all three in my album of us :) Let me also add that Kevin had NO help. I showed him where my embellies and paper were and the rest was up to him. With April Dawn the only restriction was that she scrap hers on 8x8 paper and knew nothing about the pic.

I cannot help but giggle that Kevin and I both chose a paper with a circle and black/tan/teal. I guess after this many years together we kinda think alike...on some things lol! He did an interesting job for his first scrapbook page dontchathink???

April Dawn chose some of my favorite colors so I love her version too!!!

Thanks to both and now without further adieu:

Happy Birthday!!! Crop Coming!!!

Did you hear the BIG NEWS??? After the holidays If It's Groovy is having an online crop!!! When you get a new calendar for Christmas make sure the first thing you datebook for Christmas make sure you scribble in those first pages to be here on January 4th. On January 4-10th we celebrate the one year birthday of If IT's Groovy, by posting crop challenges and games and offering lots and lots of totally rad prizes! Hope to see you all :)

Also celebrating birthdays recently were a few DT members, Janeen 2 Pagers Artist and Jen T Lead Card Artist, respectively. I asked them to share with us how they celebrated their special days. Janeen created a layout to show us her 27th out to eat and Jen's hubby and daughter made her a cake and they stayed home. She said this about that cake " My dh got carried away with adding the sugar letters and started put words on there about me to be silly, so I had a yummy and funny cake!" Happy Birthday to IIG and Both of these talented Chicks :)

Patrick Swayze

Reality TV, to me is cool. I know a lot of people think it is ridiculous, but I personally like it and dance shows are one of the ones I follow. We had what I think was a loss to our dancing world back in September, Patrick Swayze. Old school dancing that is. I would like to share with you today a layout that our design team member Peg created to show homage to him. I happen to rate the movies Ghost and Dirty Dancing up on tops of romantic movies too, so Patrick you will be missed!

Some of us here at IIG would like to show our support of Pink, by sharing our Pinked Out Layouts. Here's to finding the cure! Also I would like to share an article that I wrote that was published on Making Memories this month. I thank those who also did the same and for sharing such personal stories and journeys. Let's do what we can to find that cure!!!
