You may have read her story but did you actually see Heather's layout a few days ago? Little glitch in Blogger so here is the story again and her picture to go along with it (keeping fingers crossed!). This is one you really need to see, promise!

I thought this sounded like a pretty cool challenge when Groovy Deb first issued it to the design team. However, the more I tried to work on it, the more I struggled. I tried several different things under my base white paper with no luck. I put masks underneath, some cardboard, and a few other things, but hey, I won't bore you! I thought about using a cuttlebug embossing plate but then remembered that someone else had already done that. I wanted something original. Ok, I thought, I will cut something from my cricut and use that! Still couldn't think of the perfect thing that I wanted though!

Finally, it hit me . . . or a friend did I should say!!! She suggested that I cut something out with my cuttlebug - like my gears - and use that! And THAT is just what I did!!!

I cut out several of the gears from the Sizzix Tim Holtz die cut using my cuttlebug. I then layered them, as well as the negatives, under my base paper. After that, (admission here) I used 3 different colors of colored pencils (gray, silver and black) to do the rubbing. I loved it!! I then ripped the edges of the paper off and inked them with Tim Holtz Black Soot distress ink and attached to a black piece of cardstock. I mounted the picture on some black cardstock and ripped the edges of that paper also. I used the (you guessed it . . .) Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher to put staples in one corner of the layout, as well as all around the picture. Then I glimmer misted some of the cut out gears and added some Tim Holtz and 7 Gypsies metal gears. Last thing I did was add my title using some leftover Thickers for "Gears" and Studio 112 stickers for "The . . . Are Always Turning" and his name and date.

I was super pleased at how this B&W layout turned out, as well as the crayon (colored pencil! ;) ) rubbing turned out!

My first IIG challenge as a DT and so honored and happy!!!!

When I started this Crayola challenge I knew I want to make a fun and colorful LO just like crayolas so I start looking for a school pic or something related and I found this cute pic of my son at graduation day of his TINY tots class at the YMCA .... them I choose some papers in a few colors and because one of the papers had stars I choose a white card stock as a background and color some stars with crayolas but I didn't like it because it was to busy so I ended at using a simple beige card stock......then I found this big crayola die cut and I thought perfect to make some journaling and that's exactly what I did ...just cut some beige card stock in the same shape as the crayola die cut and put it together with a brad so I can open and close it. For the title I used some alpha rub-on and stickers. I like the way this LO came out...I think it has a little bit of everything :)

One day recently I was playing with papers while brainstorming ideas for a new layout. I found this interesting squared off design happen on accident, and I realized I liked the look of overlapping papers as part of a layout sketch. I took out my pencil and jotted down my invented sketch in my head, in my sketches notebook for future use.

I used all scrap papers for this layout of my 2-3 year old sister years ago, and even used up scrap alphabet Thickers. :)

I cut 5 sections of patterned paper into an “L” shape for each layer and I distressed all of the edges prior to layering one “L” onto the next. With the fourth layer, I pleated the paper and stitched it down for a bit of interest in paper texture. For a fun look, I used a black Crayola crayon to doodle stars and edges on the layers. Aren't crayons unexpected yet sweet? I lastly added some hand-cut stars out of the remaining paper scraps and added my title. Totally simple and fun layout. I think I will use this sketch again for another design in the future. Won't you give this design and crayon technique a try? :)

CRAYON RUBBINGS: Groovy Deb♥

Crayons make me happy. I love when school starts each year and we see an over abundance of them lining the shelves. We cannot overlook how wonderfully fragrant they are! What if they all smelled like their names? I mean come on Mac-n-Cheese crayons would be an even bigger hit than they are now! Think of the cravings! I think I will contact Crayola have a talk. They could start their own Foodie business right? LOL!!!

So here is how Crayon has inspired me this time as I used some of them on a layout. I have paper clips that arr spirals that looked like great texture to be added to a page, so I colored over them and fussy cut around them to make the flowers. I also added some doodles and Presto! Another Easter layout into the scrapbook :) Feels good to catch up and color too :)

For this color rubbings challenge I automatically thought of my daughters pictures she has
colored that I always say I am going to scrapbook my favs and never quite seem to remember to
do it. So I took a monkey and her pic she added herself and banana that my daughter made and
colored for her back to school night for me and added it to this simple color blocking layout I
made to highlight her craft. I then continued the coloring theme with cutting matching cardstock
into rectangles and rubbed crayon over the paper with my embossing folder underneath to make
it look like patterned paper then I added the title and added dashes around the lo to finish it with
that homemade kinda feel. Tfl!

CRAYON RUBBINGS: JEANNIE

I think for this month's challenge that Jeannie has shown us a great way to have one set of alphabet letters and get many uses of them. This way we can have them in all colors!

I have to be honest, this one was SOOOO hard for me. I just had no clue what to do for this. Then my son mentioned I should do words with my DYMO label maker and then do the crayon rubbing on that. I LOVED that idea until I realized how much TAPE it would use and thought NEVER MIND. Then I got these wonderful corrugated cardboard letters from a friend in the mail and then I knew, I could do this challenge.

I collect so many types of things, then I have them and I can't bear to use them, if I will have to give them away. For instance, on this layout, I used my TINY buttons and brads that I polka dotted on, my silly fruit buttons and other cutesy things. I had no problem using them because this is for ME. This layout is about my LOVE for COLOR! ALL COLORS! How could anyone possible have 1 favorite color?

I can't remember the last time that I did an outline of an image by doing a rubbing! I kinda had fun with this one. I dug through my daughter's crayon box and picked a lovely color. I used my letter stencils to create the title of my layout. I love this challenge because you can use it in so many different ways. Dig out those crayons and get rubbing!

CRAYON RUBBINGS: NATALIE

This crayon rub layout features my mom and my daughter picking peas and eating them while smelling petunias in my mom's friendship garden in Montana. We go there every summer for a couple weeks.

To create the crayon rub, I took a sheet of scrap onion-like paper that came from somewhere (always a paper pack rat) and I first laid it on a tempered-glass cutting board (which by the way is bad for your knives) and I rubbed a brownish/burgundy color on it. My crayons have most of the labels gone due to it being fun for a 3-year old to take them off! Next I took out a piece of really thick embossed vellum that had French cursive writing on it and did a rub with a purple and then moved the paper and did a rub with black. I then placed that paper on top of a pinkish piece of printed paper and then onto the background sheet. I love how the crayon rub gives the page some real texture and it was fun to see what I could use to make textures with right under my nose!

The little garden fairy is paper pieced from a Cricut cutout and a vintage picture of some woman from long ago found in one of my clip art books. The flower cut outs are also from another clip art book I have. I just chalked the images a little to match the colors of the layout.

Wow! I have to admit that the “Crayon Rubbings” Challenge was just that – a challenge!!
I have never used crayons on my layouts and I haven’t used them, as a rub-on device, since my days as a little girl, pretending to be a fashion designer, w/ my rub-on fashion plates toy (which, by the way was my most favorite toy EVER!)!!
I thought about it for days before attempting anything. I knew I wanted to use a white background because then I could use any color and I thought that the rub-on effect would show better on white. That was the easy part! The hard part was finding something w/ a texture. I couldn’t believe it, but I really had nothing w/ texture in my house – NOTHING! How could that be? Of course I didn’t look everywhere but I looked enough. I even tried a few items thinking they would work but nope, they didn’t (if you were to see the back of my completed layout, you would see the failed attempts, LOL!). Since I wasn’t having any luck and I felt like a scrappy failure, I reached into my scrap stash and grabbed a leftover piece of patterned paper and adhered it to my background paper, not knowing how my final layout would look or even what picture I would scrap (something I never do!) But I did it so I can say I accomplished something!
I then sat back and just started looking at all my scrappy supplies. Eventually my eyes landed on my stencil stash. Too be honest, I don’t remember the last time I even touched my stencils…but this time they stood out to me. I thought, instead of putting them on top of my paper and tracing within the stencil, I should try putting it under the paper and rubbing over the stencil. It took some practice, but it worked! Yay! But I really didn’t like the way the coloring looked outside of the shape of the stencil so I cut away what I didn’t like and came up w/ a cute little flourish design. Then I thought, if I make more and line them up in a row, I can make a really pretty border! And that’s just what I did. Finally, since I have this “thing” for framing my pictures w/ “rings”, I took an old ring I cut out of paper and didn’t wind up using, and did a rubbing of it. I also cut out the extra coloring I didn’t like.
After seeing the final outcome of my crayon rubbings, I liked the soft almost charcoal look of them and thought a Halloween picture would be perfect for it, and I pulled out an old picture I never scrapped. Luckily my random piece of scrap paper had Halloween colors. Finally, I added a few extra embellishments, a title, and journaling and my layout was complete! And you know what? I really do love it! Great challenge! :0)

January Challenge of the Month

As always IIG has a monthly challenge that will be something out of the box :)

This month we are asking players to participate by completing layouts using crayon in some way! Some say it is not non-toxic so please do research that if you feel you would like to know more. All month long The Groovy Chicks will be coming in with their layouts where each has used crayons in some form. We hope to inspire you to create your own!
