SUGAR COOKIE: Doreen

As we round out this month we have a few last layouts provided by Doreen after she used Nikki Sivils, Sugar Cookie. We hope that in this month we have been able to show you many different idea for using just one of her beautiful product lines. I had to giggle to myself when I saw the variety of layouts created by Doreen...a big girl bed, a puppy, married couple and Kim Kardashian! Too funny! Just goes to show this line has many possabilities. Be sure to go back over to Nikki's website and look for how you too can order some of this and others :)

From Doreen:
Cute sketch + Cute papers + Cute Subject = Cute layout!
Well, at least I think so. :0)

Having just joined the Groovy Chicks in November, this was my first experience w/ a sponsor. A sponsor is someone who gives you their product in exchange for you promoting it by using it on a layout (or other craft project). Did you catch that? "Gives" you their product? As in for free? So basically I was given free stuff to use for my hobby; Cool Beans! Even cooler beans is when the free stuff is CUTE, which is the case w/ the kit given to us by our fabulous sponsor Nikki Sivils!!! The kit is called "Sugar Cookie" and it is SUPER CUTE! It is also perfect for my super, super cute pics of my fur baby Ivanna!

These pics were taken by my son the same day I received the kit. *Note - I hadn't seen the kit until after I saw the pics*. When I saw the pics I told my son that I wanted to print them and create a layout as soon as I could! Then, I opened the kit, and I was instantly drawn to the colors and the feeling of love that jumped off the pages full of hearts! That's when I knew I had to use it to create the layout of my fur baby.

It was scrappy fate!!!

As for the sketch...I thought it was perfect 'as is' so I didn't stray too far from it, choosing to keep the other elements simple, allowing the sketch, papers, and pics to really shine!!
Which leads me back to: Cute sketch + Cute papers + Cute Subject = Cute layout!

SUGAR COOKIE: Silvana

This title on Silvana's newest Nikki Sivils project has me thinking "more icing"! I love the way the outlined letters look sugary sweet. Don't you?
Deb♥

What a great line "Sugar Cookie"!!! as soon as I got it in my hands and saw this cute cookie papers I remember I had and old pic of my son standing by the oven window "waiting for cookies " to bake, this was last feb/16/2009 so the heart shape cookies were perfect :)
I choose "sprinkle love" and "cookie border strips" papers for my layout base , add a cookie and cookie journaling cut-out, alpha stickers from the set for my title and to stick out more the part where he is looking at the cookies I cut a circle and glue it to the pic + a arrow cut-out pointing to it...perfect don't' you think?
What I love most about Nikki Sivils lines is that besides scissors and glue probably won't need anything more to make our layouts.

SUGAR COOKIE: Groovy Deb♥

Hey! I created another project with the goodies from the Nikki Sivils Sugar Cookie line! Have we had fun this month!

This pic is of my husband's mother and niece before his mom passed away. I know this young lady was very special to her and so I created this layout and plan to give it to her as a gift. I left the big area empty in case she would like to add another pic or write something in ")

TFL!

Don't forget to email a layout with at least one heart on it for your chance to win some of the fab line of paper!!!

HAVE A HEART: Silvana

Aren't these two perfect looking together?
Deb♥

I mostly scrap pics of my kids... but when I read that the challenge was to make an LO with lots of hearts I decide to scrap this cute pic of my DH and me.
I have this old collection of valentines paper by K&Company so it was perfect for this LO.... I choose a paper with hearts for my base ......but is a double side paper !!! one purple with little hearts and the other side red with big hearts and keys ....mmm what should I do? I ended up using the purple side which I like better and I roll the paper in the corner so I can show a little bit of the other side too :).
Used some more paper of the same collection to frame my picture. Lately I been into stitching in my projects just a little bit here and there and thats what I did with this LO... a couple the swirl stitches ( it was a little hard try passing a needle thru a pic + beige cardstock + red cardstock + purple cardstock ) for the title I use a a rub-on the word Sweethearts. I really enjoy making this page and scrapping a romantic pic for a change.

SUGAR COOKIE: Jen T

Jen T appropriately named her layout I Heart My Family. What a great looking family she has too! Let's take a look at how pretty they look on Nikki Sivils pretty papers!
Deb♥

SUGAR COOKIE: Natalie

Natalie's pages are here for us today with the Sugar Cookie line. You will have to smile looking at them ")
Deb♥Thank you Nikki Sivils for providing our DT with some of your great papers, cardstock stickers, and designer buttons! Your products are really quality in my opinion! The colors are so vibrant and the paper is just right, not too thin, not too thick, which is my fav for using in the Cricut. However, I didn't use the Cricut this time! I actually got out my scissors and used pencil drawn templates, too! Oh, the humanity!

This layout uses Nikki Sivils double-sided 12 x 12 papers and cardstock stickers from "Sugar Cookie", as well as some of her burlap buttons. I used some inks, glitter, glitter pens, and a crimper to add my personal touch to the items. Pop dots helped bring her charming little extras off the page!

My 3-Year old daughter is the star of this layout. If I've never told you her name before it is because I want to protect her identity a little! So I'll just let you know a little funny fact about her instead; we call her Larry! As in Larry the Cucumber from Veggie Tales! She actually named herself this and it kind of stuck! So...we have Larry in this layout pigging out on ice cream cake on her Daddy's birthday a couple of years ago. Larry has quite a "sweet tooth" and when I saw that cut and paste saying in Nikki's "Sugar Cookie" collection I had the perfect picture for it.

Honestly, it was really hard for me to decide which picture to use for the sketch we were provided with because Nikki's papers and the cut and paste sayings and stickers gave me so many choices. So needless to say I am going to be able to make many more layouts and cards with this collection!
Natalie

And more from Natalie about this layout too...

All mothers think their children are the cutest, right? Well I think my little Larry is her cutest when she's just playing and being herself. I like catching her doing things and before she can get cheeky with me, being the old soul that she is, I snap a picture! That was the motivation it took for me to get a SLR camera! I had to be quick or they'd all be grumpy pics!!!

I used Nikki Sivils "Sugar Cookie" line of papers and stickers for this layout. The sketch I used is by Liz Qualman.

SUGAR COOKIE: Sarah

Our sponsor for this month has certainly inspired The Groovy Chicks in many directions! Here is how Sarah chose to use some of the product to create a layout using memorabelia.
Deb♥

From Sarah:
When I saw all the hearts in the sponsor package, I just knew I wanted to do a page about my favorite local band, Heritage. We were so lucky to be able to go see them when we were home for New Years this year. We have their CD and listen to them all the time (even my two-year-old likes their music!). I was so great to see them in person. I really wanted to capture their spirit in the page so I used brown as the background and popped it with red, yellow and green - their signature colors. I cut out a large heart image from one of the pattern papers and stitched in red along the inside. I added my own ribbon, a date stamp and the ticket stub and wrist band from the performance. A big thanks to Nikki for supplying us with these awesome products and for sponsoring If It's Groovy!

SUGAR COOKIE: Heather

We are so lucky to have received a great pet page today from Heather using the Nikki Sivils sketch. Notice the rolled down corner? Cute huh? A great way to add distressing to a great layout! Check out the second lo she made as well...darling children aren't they? The b/w pic really is a great idea with this line don't ya think?
Deb♥

Upon receiving our goodies from Nikki, I knew exactly what I wanted to scrap!!! Having all boys in my house, it's not often that I get to scrap with hearts and pink! However, brown and pink together are my fave colors!!! So, when I opened this packet up, I knew I was going to scrap a picture of my new Christmas gift, the only other female in my house, my new kitten Jasmine aka Jaz!

I cut the heart smaller then it was originally and then distressed the edges. After distressing the edges, I misted the top right corner and the bottom point with water. After that, I rolled the paper and then used my heat tool to dry it so it would stay rounded. I then distressed the other papers that I used. I punched the heart in top left corner out and then added some Glossy Accents to the heart. I LOVED the canvas buttons that were included. I didn't want it even though (odd for an OCD person, I know!) so I included the 3 buttons on one side and put the one lonely button on the other side!

The only thing I used that was not from the Sugar Cookie collection was the lace that I already had in my scrap ribbon jar. I loved the little pink letters and so those were a MUST on this lo!!!

So, now you can finally see, my first ever layout of my new precious kitten!

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Hi Everyone! Happy Valentine's Day! I thought I would take today to show you a little project I worked on to keep on my desk and this one has my little Valentine daughters right there for me to see while I create :)

I bought a 3" styrafoam cube and took one of the papers from Nikki Sivils' Sugar Cookie line then I scored every 3" which you can see in one of the pics below. Using my Fiskars Fingertip Craft Knife I cut alongside some of the lines that would fit along the block.. The other pieces were cut away and used to help embellish the top.

Using some of the supplies in the kit I added little pictures of my daughter adhering them to party toothpicks then inserted them into the foam. Voila! I have a photo holder!

If you need further instructions feel free to drop me a line :)TFL!

SUGAR COOKIE: Darlene

Darlene has made several amazing projects to share this month using the Sugar Cookie line sponsored by Nikki Sivils. Let me get right to those for you. Enjoy!
Deb♥

This month, If It’s Groovy is being sponsored by Nikki Sivils! Nikki was so generous with her products! I was able to make 5 layouts with 8 sheets of her paper only!!! That was pretty exciting to me when I realized how far I could “stretch” my stash! :)

I really loved the fun yet funky style of the Sugar Cookie line! This line was sooo cute and the colors are truly yummy! These layouts seemed to make themselves. I had most of these assembled in one short night, shocker! :) I only used some clear glitter glue for extra sparkle and glitziness on some of the elements, as well as some border punches. :) And voila, done! :)

Everything you need to make as many layouts as I did is in one kit of the Sugar Cookie line! Learn where to snag a set of this collection at Nikki Sivils's site!

Make sure to play along with If It’s Groovy’s heart challenge this month to be in the running for this Nikki Sivils collection as well! :)

SUGAR COOKIE: Silvana

Today we bring some more projects to share made by Silvana. Each come from the Nikki Sivils Sugar Cookie line. These are very cute cards with one of them open to show dimension.
Deb♥

SUGAR COOKIE: Silvana

Using our sponsored packet of goodies from the Nikki Sivils Sugar Cookie collection Silvana was busy at work and came up with this...
Deb♥

Ohhhh!!! such a beautiful collection I didn't know which paper I want to use first.... so I went to look for photos and I found this pic of my brother's wedding ( two years ago) and I immediately knew what kind of LO I want it to do. I start with this nice yellowish diamond pattern paper "love always" as a base then I frame the photo with a brown cardstock and this pretty pink cardstock.... after that I punch lots of little flowers in pink and brown and make the shape of the heart, I just love the way this come out, it adds texture to the page and looks great. For the title I use the alpha stickers part of the kit to make the word FOREVER which seems like a perfect title for a wedding picture, I just use my white pen to draw around each letter so it pops a little bit more... a little tags sticker in the corner with a nice button to write down the date and I finish it with a recycle ribbon and a handmade pin.
Thanks so much Nikki for this beautiful collection, I have so much fun following your sketch.

February 10, 2011

SUGAR COOKIE: Jen T

Another layout created with our sponsored products this month :)
This time by Jen T.
Thanks for stopping by, Deb♥

ok, when I found out that we were making a page for Nikki Sivils I was so excited! I just love these heart papers and I had so much fun making this page! I felt like using distressing so I distressed all the edges and layered the pp so that you can see the other cool pp underneath and folded the edges too with a button to top it off. Then I stitched the circle to add texture and layered stickers and die-cuts along the edge of the PIC to add more interest. And finally I made a flower out of cut-out hearts and added a cool canvas covered button in the center. Tfl!

An Interview and Giveaway with Nikki Sivils

Groovy Friends I am delighted to share with you an interview I have with Nikki Sivils which will follow...but read all the way to the end because there is a GIVEAWAY!!!

Hi, Nikki! Thanks for being here and spending some time with us here at If It's Groovy today!

Well thank you so much for having me!

How did you start your art?

I’ve been doodling for years; I’ve never been a big sit down and draw kind of person but always doodling on restaurant napkins, on airplanes, car trips and I’m even known to wake up in the middle of the night and draw on the paper pad that sit on my night stand! I still doodle all the time. However I have now started to sit down and take the time to do more serious sketching. I can’t draw like a portrait of someone but I can sure draw some cute animals and fun images!

Are you a crop kind of girl or studio queen?

I’m both actually! I love my craft studio, as it’s a huge 2-room loft over the living room and kitchen. It’s also my personal office for work too. This use to be my preferred place to scrapbook b/c I get so much more done by myself at home but now that “work” is also in my home when I go to a crop I’m a machine popping out layouts like crazy! I especially like 2-day crops where you can leave your stuff and come back the next day, not having to set up my stuff all over again. Love that!
I also like going to crops because I love meeting new people at different events! I’ve met some life long friends at scrapbook crops! In fact one of my best friends I met at a crop 4 or 5 years ago and we go to crops all the time together and I even outsource work to her for my company!

When I read that you were "living your dream", I knew that I would love to have some time talking with you! Like so many other paper crafters, a little birdie told me that you like paper! Many of us have that in common! How many sheets of paper would you say you accumulated in your first year of scrapbooking and card making?

Well the thing is I started scrapbooking over 20 years ago and there wasn’t any scrapbook paper back then, instead I used magazines, newspapers, restaurant menus and construction paper. Crazy to even think that now! But when scrapbook papers started to appear I bought just a bit b/c it was so new and strange, well I’ve made up for that… I must have over a couple hundred thousand sheets of paper… seriously! (Don’t tell my hubby though.)

Paying visits to your blog, we learn that living your dream meant designing and manufacturing your own paper! That's how you do it! Create your own stash right? Can you tell us how you brought that to life?

I’ve been sketching for years and have jotted down every little detail of an image or character that I’d like to see come to life on paper. (I have several notebooks full of ideas, some of which I’ve used and some may never come to life.) Anyway I told my husband that I’d like to start designing scrapbook paper, knowing how much I loved to scrapbook he started researching the industry to find out if this is something that might be possible and what my first steps would be. Dan, my husband, is an attorney so he’s like a super great researcher that would in the end pay off big for me. Long story short, he left his law firm and started running this company with me. Which I can tell you was a huge risk and I still think his partners in the firm are thinking he’s crazy! But for me it’s in-house council, which was been wonderful…. I have not had to read one single contract, I’ve not had to spend 100’s of dollars on an attorney to negotiate contracts for me and we work really great together! But I think the best part is that his stress level has gone down by a thousand percent not having to deal with law cases, now he just has to deal with me! Bless his heart!

Please share with us about your adorable mascot!

That’s my sweet boy, Willie-B! He’s in dog haven now healthy and chasing squirrels I’m sure! My Willie-B was a bit round in the mid-section with these little legs so when I was coming up with a mascot I used him; and since his name ended with “B” I thought Willie-B in a bee costume would be awesome. Bees aren’t meant to fly because they are much too large for their tiny wings (kind of like Willie-B and his little short legs) that I thought it would be perfect for my mascot! I also wanted to keep his memory alive for as long as possible, he was very special to me and I had gotten him about 2 years before my husband and I met so Willie-B was my little “man”! I sure miss him! I miss him every single day!

I’m also huge “dog” lover too; and I’m apart of several “Yorkshire Terrier” rescues in the Midwest! I’ve personally rescued over a 100 dogs from puppy mills (which are really bad in my area) and well just finding them lost on the streets! If you follow my blog I occasionally have a dog I’ve found or rescued and trying to find him or her a forever home. I’m VERY strict about where I place my rescues, I’ve been told its like getting past a federal agent to meet with the president! But having said that my rescues have all been successful members of their new families in their new forever homes! (Please spay and neuter your pets and don’t buy your puppies in pet stores! Okay off my soapbox now! ;)

When I saw your paper lines and embellishments I was so taken by the cute names of each paper line! How do you come up with those?

Those actually are very easy for me, I normally come up with a name of a paper line first, then start writing info and details about what I want it to be, and then start sketching until its what I want. An example is I have a new spring 2011 paper line called Max & Mollie, its named after my twin niece and nephews then I just go from their. Sometimes they break off into two different collections and even a different name, but mostly I name them first.
Examples:
My paper line “Victoria’s Street”, I designed b/c my niece, Victoria, had just moved down the street from me, well my sister, her momma did!
“Henry’s Brilliance” was named after my kiddo Henry because well I think he’s brilliant! (Don’t we all think our kids are smart!)

“Ellie’s Day Out”, it was named and designed for my niece Ellie, who is very sweet and shy.

“My Friend Birdie” is named and designed for my best friend, Birdie, who has these cute little bird legs!

“Sugar Cookie” the paper that you all get to play with, it was designed b/c my mom would make these giant sugar cookies for us on Valentines Day and we would decorate them and then eat them! That’s why the one paper called “Cookie Love” that has a huge cookie on it, its just like the one my mom use to make!

And some of my paper lines I dream up like “North Pole Nights” and “Willow Bee” these lines also each tell their own story!

How were you inspired when creating your paper products? Do you start with music, doodle, take walks?

Oops, I think I answered that in the question above… I ramble sometimes!

Which is your personal favorite? Can you show us creations with that line of paper/embellishments?

This is like asking which of my kids is my favorite! Which actually I only have one so I can say… Henry is my favorite! So I guess it would be like asking which of my 4 dogs are my favorite… I can’t pick just one!

When I actually talk about my papers individually I seem to always say “This is my favorite line….” but really I love them all. I guess “My Sweet Cherry Pie” will always be my “first born” and so I do have an attachment to it that I don’t have with the others. I design every paper line with some kind of memory or for someone or story line. Like “Victoria’s Street” which is named after my niece, Victoria, that moved down the street from me.

Along with running a fun business you had to have thought of downfalls too since we are living in an economy that is experiencing issues. How did you weigh the pros and cons for starting at the time you chose? Any advice you would give to someone wanting to follow this path?

Great question! Well when we very first decided to do this business the economy had not quite as tanked as bad as it has lately but we knew it was headed in that direction. So we took a risk, you have to take them if you want to live your dream. You just have too. We started the company about 9 months before our first release. It takes a ton of time and patients to start your own business. We had no friends in the industry that owned a scrapbook company so we had no one to ask for help or ask questions, we just found and did it our own way. Looking back now there are things I’d do again and many I would not, live and learn right! Be willing to make mistakes, because I’ve made some pretty bad ones! Like shipping a pallet of paper that weighted 100’s of lbs to the wrong state, not even the correct side of the United States… Oh and the best part I shipped it to a PO Box! Now that was an interesting phone call! We laugh now but it took a bit of time for me to get to that point!! LOL

It’s the hardest job I’ve ever had and the most fun and rewarding too! I’ve cried my eyes out and I’ve beamed with joy! I’m learning to not take things personal but when a paper line that you put your heart and soul into doesn’t sell well it’s hard to not blame yourself and get your feelings hurt. Once I got on a website that someone had said there was a really nice “thread” going on, on a certain forum, so I went and checked it out… there were so many nice things said that it brought tears to my eyes, then a couple of ladies were really hateful about some of my paper designs and it literally broke my heart. I cried and was really hurt, and certainly I understand my designs are not everyone’s style but words hurt when you’ve worked really hard on something and then it’s being talked badly about. So you have to have thick skin… which I’m trying to work on, but honestly not that good at.

You have to except failure… some things just fail. You have to have a good support group of family and friend’s b/c I work 70 plus hours a week, which was hard for some of my family members (outside my home) to except at first. Heck I didn’t even know how much work it would take. Also I often have to ask my family for help, when I need over 1,000 make-n-takes prepped for an event I can’t do it all by myself. You’ll often find my hubby on the couch at night before a big event punching circles and cutting paper, poor guy; he had no idea what he was getting into! Hee Hee

But mostly you have to BELIEVE. Believe in yourself and that your partner believes in you too. Dan has been my rock and is allowing me to live my dream.

Where can scrap and card enthusiasts find all of the exciting products you have created?

Several places. My website is http://www.nikkisivils.com/. I don’t sell to the consumer just wholesale but I do have a store finder on my website, and an awesome gallery where my Design Team Diva’s and I have our own galleries.

My blog has lots of inspiration every month and you can experience what I’m doing in my life and with my business on a weekly base.

http://nikkisdoghouse.blogspot.com/

Also I’m on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/nikkisivilspaper and Twitter.

I have to tell you that one of the absolute coolest lines I have seen from your paper lines is Dan The Record Man! Groovy, if I do say so myself! Is there a story that goes with that one? Each piece reminds me of being a teenager~really awesome right down to the inserts for the 45's! Total flashbacks!

Thank you! I’ve heard that a lot! Gotta love flashbacks, right! Well my adorable hubby was in a band in college during the 80’s and he loves music so that’s how it came to be. I named the paper line first (which is how I normally start designing) then kind of went from there. I wanted something retro and groovy! ;)

One last question today that I like to ask...What makes you a Groovy Chick? I can answer it just by taking a look at the line we were just discussing, but what does being groovy mean to you?

Hee hee… groovy is great! Who doesn’t want to be groovy! Being fun and happy with a great personality, being able to go with the flow and see the lighter side of things. Also believe in who you really are!

Thanks also Nikki for sponsoring this month's challenge! I know that the lucky winner will feel so appreciative when she receives her goodies from Nikki Sivils, Scrapbooker.

No problem… one of the perks of the business is getting to share my products with people! Thanks for having me and I hope you all enjoyed play with my Valentine line, Sugar Cookie! -Nikki

We have enjoyed it SO much and cannot wait to spend the month showing all of the projects we have been creating! Thanks again Nikki, for everything!
