Bragging Rights for Grandma-Repost with Pics

Dearest Paparazzi, It came to my attention two times today that our blog has had a few "issues" this month. I know that BLogger does not charge us for the use of our blogs so I humbly just will repost this with pics and say Thanks for being here and enjoy the show ;)
Deb♥

Silvana may have made this book and keeps bragging rights for doing so, but think of how much Grammy will get when showing off this beauty! Here is what Silvana has to say about it...
Deb♥

For a while I have been wanting to make a little mini album for my grandma just with pics of her grandkids and great grandkids and I been collecting pics of my little cousins (I'm the oldest) for a few months , I was going to wait until I have all their pics but since I have been asking for a few months and they keep forgetting :( I decided to print the ones I have and stole some from their Facebook (ha ha ha) and I realize that I only was missing 2 cousins so I went ahead and did this MA(mini album) .... I call it "My grandkids"
I start with a 12" x 6" doubleside cardstock (blue and green) as my base so when I folded to make the pocket I got a 6" x 4" MA. Then I just add a few flaps in the inside for the pics and it was ready to decorate it....since the paper is already so pretty I didn't want to add too much stuff ...so I just added a few flowers, some punch butterflies and some embellishments.
I love the way it came out and as soon as I get the other pics I'll send it to my Grammy ....I'm sure she'll like it .

CRAYON RUBBINGS: HEATHER

You may have read her story but did you actually see Heather's layout a few days ago? Little glitch in Blogger so here is the story again and her picture to go along with it (keeping fingers crossed!). This is one you really need to see, promise!
Deb♥

I thought this sounded like a pretty cool challenge when Groovy Deb first issued it to the design team. However, the more I tried to work on it, the more I struggled. I tried several different things under my base white paper with no luck. I put masks underneath, some cardboard, and a few other things, but hey, I won't bore you! I thought about using a cuttlebug embossing plate but then remembered that someone else had already done that. I wanted something original. Ok, I thought, I will cut something from my cricut and use that! Still couldn't think of the perfect thing that I wanted though!

Finally, it hit me . . . or a friend did I should say!!! She suggested that I cut something out with my cuttlebug - like my gears - and use that! And THAT is just what I did!!!

I cut out several of the gears from the Sizzix Tim Holtz die cut using my cuttlebug. I then layered them, as well as the negatives, under my base paper. After that, (admission here) I used 3 different colors of colored pencils (gray, silver and black) to do the rubbing. I loved it!! I then ripped the edges of the paper off and inked them with Tim Holtz Black Soot distress ink and attached to a black piece of cardstock. I mounted the picture on some black cardstock and ripped the edges of that paper also. I used the (you guessed it . . .) Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher to put staples in one corner of the layout, as well as all around the picture. Then I glimmer misted some of the cut out gears and added some Tim Holtz and 7 Gypsies metal gears. Last thing I did was add my title using some leftover Thickers for "Gears" and Studio 112 stickers for "The . . . Are Always Turning" and his name and date.

I was super pleased at how this B&W layout turned out, as well as the crayon (colored pencil! ;) ) rubbing turned out!

CRAYON RUBBINGS:SILVANA

Crayons are a big part of school. I think most of us think of them together :) Speaking of together let me show you the first challenge layout created by our new DT member, Silvy!

Deb♥

My first IIG challenge as a DT and so honored and happy!!!!

When I started this Crayola challenge I knew I want to make a fun and colorful LO just like crayolas so I start looking for a school pic or something related and I found this cute pic of my son at graduation day of his TINY tots class at the YMCA .... them I choose some papers in a few colors and because one of the papers had stars I choose a white card stock as a background and color some stars with crayolas but I didn't like it because it was to busy so I ended at using a simple beige card stock......then I found this big crayola die cut and I thought perfect to make some journaling and that's exactly what I did ...just cut some beige card stock in the same shape as the crayola die cut and put it together with a brad so I can open and close it. For the title I used some alpha rub-on and stickers. I like the way this LO came out...I think it has a little bit of everything :)

Jouraling reads:
This is picture at graduation day in your first little school, you were 2 years old, it was only two days a week but you used to love it!!! so much that when we said to you: today is a school day, every five minutes you'll say now? now? now? lets go to school!!!

Sound Advice from a Scrapper

Doreen has great advice to follow but before we get there I want to point out how totally rad her title is. Don't you think so too?
Deb♥

What Came First the Picture or the Paper?
-“Say Hello To My Little Friend”-

I don’t know about you, but when I scrapbook I usually start with the pictures.
I’ll look through my stash and find a picture that stands out to me and then proceed w/ creating a layout. That has always been my process.

Well, this time I veered from that process; I let my papers dictate the layout I created.
It was quite by accident too! I was doing some cleaning up of my scrap area…you know that thing we hate to do, but must do because if we don’t we won’t be able to scrap…and I came across a pack of papers – it contained some full sheets and some scraps.

When I saw these papers just lying in there in their Ziploc bag…it instantly brought to mind a picture that would go great with them!! Of course, when inspiration strikes, you gotta go with it, so I stopped cleaning (hee, hee) and dug out the pictures and quickly created this layout!

I love it because, well, it’s cute (even if I do say so myself LOL!), but also because it came to me very easily! There was no stress involved, even the title just popped into my mind once I saw the pictures again! Also, I used up some scraps and that is always a bonus!

So next time I am struggling to complete a layout, instead of digging through my pictures first, perhaps I will start with my papers instead...

Give it a try, it may just inspire you too!

Surviving the Odds

Grab a tissue! Sarah has a story for us...
Deb♥

My sweet dog, Annabelle, has been through the ringer. We adopted her when she was a year old. Three weeks after bringing her home, a small tumor popped up on her cheek. I cried all the way to the vet's office. They removed it and it was benign. Then, a couple of years later, she got heartworms. That was very scary. We treated her and she beat it, although it was hard on her. She's my little survivor! I wanted to create a page that documented how strong and fearless she is. My sweet Annabelle is most definitely a survivor!

One thing I did on this page which I have not done before is stamp over a picture. I overlapped the floral stamp onto the picture and I love the way it turned out. Have you tried stamping on a picture? You should!

Happy Birthday Groovy Chick Darlene!!!

Since you have now seen Groovy Chick Darlene's crayon layout now how about a big Happy Birthday to her? She celebrates hers today and we celebrate with her!

Have a great day Darlene!!!

CRAYON RUBBINGS: DARLENE

There is about 10 days left on our scrappy challenge this month to use crayons. Have you opened that big box of 64 recently? Check out Darlene's layout :)
Deb♥

One day recently I was playing with papers while brainstorming ideas for a new layout. I found this interesting squared off design happen on accident, and I realized I liked the look of overlapping papers as part of a layout sketch. I took out my pencil and jotted down my invented sketch in my head, in my sketches notebook for future use.

I used all scrap papers for this layout of my 2-3 year old sister years ago, and even used up scrap alphabet Thickers. :)

I cut 5 sections of patterned paper into an “L” shape for each layer and I distressed all of the edges prior to layering one “L” onto the next. With the fourth layer, I pleated the paper and stitched it down for a bit of interest in paper texture. For a fun look, I used a black Crayola crayon to doodle stars and edges on the layers. Aren't crayons unexpected yet sweet? I lastly added some hand-cut stars out of the remaining paper scraps and added my title. Totally simple and fun layout. I think I will use this sketch again for another design in the future. Won't you give this design and crayon technique a try? :)

Do You See a Little Trend?

Have you noticed the little trend that I first spotted once I saw this really precious layout shown today by Jen T? It's there! Look closely and you will see the little tiny letters spelling out the name of Jen's beautiful little girl. They are everywhere and you can see used here why they are so trendy :)
Deb♥

Sometimes when I see a paper I love- a picture comes to mind that I know would go perfect with it...that was the case with this picture of my new baby girl mackenzie. This is a picture of her with her kitty toy that she loves snuggling with. I just wanted to use the simple ,pretty and girly paper with the doily and flower to accent the page so that your eye would be drawn to the pretty picture of her. tfl!

CRAYON RUBBINGS: Groovy Deb♥

Crayons make me happy. I love when school starts each year and we see an over abundance of them lining the shelves. We cannot overlook how wonderfully fragrant they are! What if they all smelled like their names? I mean come on Mac-n-Cheese crayons would be an even bigger hit than they are now! Think of the cravings! I think I will contact Crayola have a talk. They could start their own Foodie business right? LOL!!!

So here is how Crayon has inspired me this time as I used some of them on a layout. I have paper clips that arr spirals that looked like great texture to be added to a page, so I colored over them and fussy cut around them to make the flowers. I also added some doodles and Presto! Another Easter layout into the scrapbook :) Feels good to catch up and color too :)

Have fun with yours and be sure to enter your layout into our challenge this month!

CRAYON RUBBINGS: JEN T.

This layout by Jen T makes me smile :)
Deb♥

For this color rubbings challenge I automatically thought of my daughters pictures she has
colored that I always say I am going to scrapbook my favs and never quite seem to remember to
do it. So I took a monkey and her pic she added herself and banana that my daughter made and
colored for her back to school night for me and added it to this simple color blocking layout I
made to highlight her craft. I then continued the coloring theme with cutting matching cardstock
into rectangles and rubbed crayon over the paper with my embossing folder underneath to make
it look like patterned paper then I added the title and added dashes around the lo to finish it with
that homemade kinda feel. Tfl!

Fairy Cuteness!

It is with great sadness that I post this project being that it is the last from our Groovy Chick Jeannie, but I also as well as the other team members do wish her much success as she moves into new areas. You will be missed and here is a most beautiful send off made by Jeannie :)

We love you Girl! Best wishes, Deb♥

I will call this my FAIRY PROJECT in progress. I have had this ensemble done forever. I had the greatest hopes of mass producing these kits and putting them inmy ETSY store and making a fortune. Well after I got on kit all together, that was all I was making. This ensemble consists of: A custom made purse with a pocket that has a fairy in the vinyl pocket. The fairy is all paper pieced, by me. The fairy is called FAIRY ISABELLA, my wonderful friend and fabulous artist made this for my youngest when she was in the hospital in San Francisco, many hours from home. The artist is no other than the awesome Therese Travis. Look her up sometime and see her wonderful work.

Back to the ensemble: A purse, a notebook with attached pen, fairy decorated crayons, CD holder paper doll kit (handmade by me) and the grand finale, a scrabble tile necklace with a tiny version of FAIRY ISABELLA on it.

The hardest part of this was the CD paper doll kit. I just have not been able to come up with a way to make paper dolls and keep them Isabella proof. I laminate them to make them strong. But after laminating them, they are slippery and I have not come up with a way to attach the extra clothes that is doable for little hands. Adhesives do not stick to laminate, paper clips would be goofy. I can’t attach magnets since adhesive will not stick to the laminate.

In the middle of trying to finish this project, before Christmas, I had a FACEBOOK status about losing my marbles over my Paper Dolls. Now you are all in the know as to why I was losing it. I finally came up with the idea of attaching all the clothes and hats with strategically placed decorative brads. It looks cute enough, but my 3 year old can’t do them.

I decided to give up on making my life’s fortunes from CD paper doll kits. The whole adhesive issue did me in. If you are reading this post and have some genius way for me to make these dolls durable but still playable for a 3 year old (almost 4) princess, please let me know. She would love to play with them, but sadly I have not let her use them yet for fear the first play day will be the last for the CD paper doll kit.

So, the lesson from this post? Sometimes fabulous ideas take flight and are very successful and sometimes grand plans just do not work out the way we want them to, even in crafting, the crazy world we all live in. This is Groovy Jeannie reporting, I am going back to the drawing board on this one!

Decorating for the kiddies

Sometimes we should take our scrappy supplies and create projects off of the page.
Here is a great example today from Jeannie!
Deb♥

This project was initally posted on my blog. August 9th 2010. I got some very nice feedback online and even more when people come to my home and see them in person, I thought you might like to read about this project. You can go to the original post. Here is the link:

http://polkacabana.wordpress.com/2010/08/09/the-mantel-project/
Part of the original post reads:

"It seems lately, if I get a “PROJECT” done, it is nothing short of a miracle. I had the 1st part of this project done, but I had the idea after my pictures were done, to do individual blocks for each child, and those, for some reason, took me awhile. So months after I announce my MANTEL PROJECT, it is done. I got the idea to do this A LONG TIME AGO!! I read an article somewhere about color properties, relating to how you can use the color meaning in your scrapbooking. Well, I thought it would be great to research the color properties of the main colors ROYGBIV and see how they apply to each one of my children. Lo and behold, I have 7 children, the perfect number to ROYGBIV them. So, now on my mantel, the kids are in ROYGBIV order instead of age. This bothers the children who are my LEFT BRAINED thinkers. but my RIGHT BRAIN thinkers, totally get it! So here is the MANTEL PROJECT, in R-O-Y-G-B-I-V order!!!"

You can go to the original post to view and see the COLOR properties that go along/describe each child.

Trash Talk!!!

Someone recently said something to me that I have been giving a lot of thought to. Although I don't have the words verbatim it was something along the lines of "how can you be so into going green and tree hugging when you are a scrapbooker?". Well I know all too well how much trash we create when we have leftovers that we do not use and I really do save just about every scrap that I can for reusual. I always use my punches to have a stash of little embellies to add to my pages. I also keep a cardboard box of nothing but bigger scraps so that I cut a 12x12 as little as I can. Many of us are like that...right?

You ARE making cards and tags with your leftovers YES?

Well here is my latest way of using some scraps...

In this pic below I wanted to cut out my daughter's snow day pic to a smaller size than it was printed so I actually kept that comment from above in my thoughts and created a frame to go around her pic using what would have become clutter. Like it? Saved the Earth a little, repurposed my acid free trashola, AND made for an interesting, albeit somewhat unusual frame :)

*Try* to keep our planet clean, beautiful and friendly, it's groovy!

CRAYON RUBBINGS: JEANNIE

I think for this month's challenge that Jeannie has shown us a great way to have one set of alphabet letters and get many uses of them. This way we can have them in all colors!
Deb♥

I have to be honest, this one was SOOOO hard for me. I just had no clue what to do for this. Then my son mentioned I should do words with my DYMO label maker and then do the crayon rubbing on that. I LOVED that idea until I realized how much TAPE it would use and thought NEVER MIND. Then I got these wonderful corrugated cardboard letters from a friend in the mail and then I knew, I could do this challenge.

I collect so many types of things, then I have them and I can't bear to use them, if I will have to give them away. For instance, on this layout, I used my TINY buttons and brads that I polka dotted on, my silly fruit buttons and other cutesy things. I had no problem using them because this is for ME. This layout is about my LOVE for COLOR! ALL COLORS! How could anyone possible have 1 favorite color?

Hope you like the layout!

11111111

I have been waiting for this day for awhile now! You see, the number 111 and 1111 have been following me around for what feels like forever. It once would bug me, but now after doing some research I found that it is supposed to be a high spiritual number and hey, I'll take that :)

I am going to show you some pics I have taken to just give you a glimpse of what I mean. The pics are taken fast so they may not look too good but you'll get the gist.

Do you have a number?

P.S. My favorite Bible verse just happens to be Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Funny how the thing is that I am always seeing the number and how my verse is about something I am not seeing. Maybe I am not paying attention to something, but now when I catch the number (just about daily on everything) I say a prayer that God opens my eyes! Cool right???

Love Letters to A Sweetie

Have you written anything personal on a layout recently? Everyone should! It is such a treasure to let the person in the layout know how much you feel for them. Give it a try! Here is one from Natalie...

I used K and Co. Berry Sweet Paper and embellishments. If you've noticed I use this paper a lot to scrap pics of my Dollbaby, then you are very observant! I don't use it exclusively, but the album I am doing has the same relative colors and they look so good with her complexion!
She loves wearing glasses and hats and I do think she's pretty cool! She will often put something silly on her face and say, "How do I yook?" "Fabulous, baby, fabulous!" or "Pretty Silly!" are my usual responses!

Awesome Acrylic Painting

An artist comes in many forms. Here is a great example of how one type of art can lead you into many areas. Have you tried acrylic painting in your scrapbooks or on canvas? Give it a try! Think about the kind of wonderful addition it would be to your All About My Groovy Self book! Here is a truly great piece of art from Darlene ")
Deb♥

I used to attend Fashion Industries High School in NYC back a few years ago, and my elected major was art and graphic design. I had two periods of varied art classes everyday during my 4 years at Fashion. I learned how to work with acrylics, graphite, charcoal, and watercolors during my courses. This collage that I made for this photo showcases some of my better work during high school. Looking at this makes me realize how out-of-touch I am with painting and art! Upon looking through my older art recently, I decided to visit my artsy-ness and try my hand at painting again. Maybe in a few weeks I can share my newest painting with you... until then, won't you give painting on canvas a try? It is very calming and motivational, and you likely have all the supplies in your crafty home already! :)

CRAYON RUBBINGS: SARAH

I am so pleased to show you a layout today coming from our very own new kid on the block Sarah! Just lookie at her title!
Deb♥

I can't remember the last time that I did an outline of an image by doing a rubbing! I kinda had fun with this one. I dug through my daughter's crayon box and picked a lovely color. I used my letter stencils to create the title of my layout. I love this challenge because you can use it in so many different ways. Dig out those crayons and get rubbing!

Hanging in Jeannie's Place

I know we always want to see how other people scrap! Don't we? Here is a glimpse into Jeannie's Place!
Deb♥

This was a project that I really loved doing. I am a person who needs things out in the open when I create. I have tried different methods of orgainizing things and nothing had worked. What I decided to do was to take some plain plastic shoe boxes, put some WOW factor on them and use the MULTITUDES of organizing containers I have to make compartments on the inside of the shoe box.

I have been using this system for awhile, and I really think it is working. I still lose things, I still misplace things, but for the most part I love what I have done. My next step is to make SIGNS on popsicle sticks to show WHERE to put things away. I am constantly forgetting WHERE I put something, so if I had a sign on a container for the scissors, then I would always put my scissors away in that container. So maybe if I get that far, I will ask Groovy Deb to post another picture.

You can see my MARY ENGELBREIT love, loud and clear with this project. My table I even did MARY style, so my boxes, match perfectly, perched on top of the table.
